Coda Help

How to get started with Coda, and what to do when something doesn't work. If your question isn't answered here, see Still stuck? at the end.

Get started

Coda runs on a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 13 or newer, on 64-bit Linux (Intel or AMD, Ubuntu 22.04 or later, or similar), or on 64-bit Windows 10 (22H2) or Windows 11.

  1. Create an account. Continue with Google to get a one-time $50 starter credit (see Credit and billing below).
  2. Open the Download page.
  3. Install the app.
    • Mac: open the file you downloaded, drag Coda to Applications, then open Coda from Applications.
    • Linux: put the AppImage you downloaded (Coda-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage, or -linux-arm64 on ARM) in a folder you own and will keep, such as ~/Applications. The folder's path may use only letters, digits, spaces and . _ + @ ~ -. Make it runnable: in that folder, run chmod +x on the AppImage, or in Files choose Properties › Allow executing file as program. Then open it (it doesn't need libfuse2). If AppArmor blocks Coda's sandbox (as it can on Ubuntu 23.10 and newer), Coda asks on first start for permission to run it: choose Allow and type your password. This adds one AppArmor profile, for this AppImage only, and Coda restarts itself. If your system has no way to ask for your password, Coda shows the exact command instead: choose Copy command, paste it in a terminal, enter your password, then open Coda again. If AppArmor's tools aren't installed, Coda asks you to install the apparmor package first. If you later move or rename the AppImage, Coda asks once more.
    • Windows: open the installer you downloaded and follow it.
  4. Log in to the app with the same account. To have your agents use Coda's AI models, paid from your Coda credit, open the app's Settings › Model providers, choose Add provider and pick Coda. Each engine that uses Coda's models is listed in the app's Settings › Apps & tools, where you can disconnect it. On Pro you can also connect your own AI provider instead.
  5. Give your lead agent its first job. Write it the way you'd brief a colleague: what to do, and what done looks like. When an agent needs a decision or your OK, it shows under Needs you.

On a Mac, once your lead agent has answered, Coda offers to turn on notifications, so you know when an agent needs you.

Logging in and email

  • Log in with your email and password, or with Continue with Google. Passwords are 10 to 128 characters.
  • Verifying your email. An account you sign up for, with a password or with Google, starts with its address verified: there is nothing to do. Until an address is verified, you can't buy Coda Pro or credit, or create or join an organization.
  • Forgot your password? Choose Forgot password? on the Log in page. The link in the email works once, for an hour. Setting a new password logs you out everywhere, including the desktop app.
  • Coda's emails are sent from no-reply@coda.ai. If one doesn't arrive, check your spam folder. An account gets at most 5 password-reset emails a day.

Credit and billing

  • Coda's AI models are paid from your Coda credit, by the model and the tokens used. Your credit and usage are in the app's Settings › Billing.
  • Starter credit. A one-time $50 credit when you sign up with Google, or later choose Link Google in the app's Settings › You › Account. It's given once per Google account. An account made with email alone starts with no credit until Google is connected.
  • Free. When your starter credit is used up, go Pro to keep using AI models.
  • Coda Pro is $20 a month, and renews every month until you cancel. Each paid month includes up to $20 of credit, which doesn't carry over. On Pro you can also buy credit that never expires (monthly credit is used first) and use your own API keys (Anthropic, OpenAI and others) on your own computers.
  • Cancel, change your card or see invoices from the app's Settings › Billing. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and Pro lasts until the end of the month you paid for. If a renewal payment fails, you have 7 days to update your payment before Pro ends.
  • Out of credit. An agent that runs out of credit pauses and says so, and carries on once there's credit again.
  • Organizations. If you belong to an organization, it pays for your Coda use from its own credit, and Settings › Billing says so. An organization's Coda Pro is $20 a month for each member. Each paid month adds $20 of credit per member to the organization's credit, shared by everyone in it.

Teams

  1. In the app's Settings › Organization, give your organization a name and choose Create. You'll be its owner. You need a verified email address.
  2. Under People, choose + Invite member, enter your teammate's email address, pick their role (Member, Admin or Owner) and choose Invite. On Pro, each member takes a $20-a-month seat. If no paid seat is open, the rest of this month's price for the new seat is charged when they join.
  3. Your teammate opens Coda, logged in with the address the invite was sent to, and chooses Join in Settings › Organization or the account menu. From then on, the organization pays for their Coda use from its credit.

Slack

  • Agents use Slack: in the Coda app, open Settings › Apps & tools and choose Connect on the Slack tile. You log in to Slack once, in your browser, and then every agent can use Slack.
  • Send to Coda: choose Add Coda to Slack on the same page to add Coda to your Slack workspace. Then pick Send to Coda under More actions on any Slack message, and an agent gets that message.
  • Slack's page is blank, or says your browser isn't supported. Slack's own sign-in page doesn't open in some versions of Safari. Copy the page's address from Safari's address bar and open it in Chrome or Firefox. If you're already logged in to Slack in that browser, you go straight to Slack's page to allow Coda.

Your data and safety

  • Agents work on your computer, with your files and tools. They run as your user, so they can reach anything your account on that computer can, not only the folder you point them to. When an agent wants a decision or your OK, it asks under Needs you.
  • If you let agents use apps on your Mac (the app offers this on a card), every agent on that Mac, and any command it runs, can see your screen and use apps, through macOS's Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions. You can take those back in macOS's System Settings, under Privacy & Security.
  • To do a job, agents send your messages and what they read to the AI model they use. Coda's models are run by Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.
  • The desktop app sends crash reports and usage counts, tied to a random ID for your install, never to your account. They never include your prompts, messages, model answers, code or files. You can turn them off in the app's Settings.
  • Deleting your account. Choose Delete account in the app's Settings › You › Account. This logs you out everywhere and revokes your keys. Any credit left is lost and isn't refunded. You can't delete your account while your own Coda Pro can still bill you, or while you're the only owner of an organization.
